Clase Azul: The ultiimate tequila experience in Mexico

A few weeks ago, Clase Azul kindly invited us to Los Cabos to experience their new tequila sensory experience; “A Taste of Culture”, as well as offering us a chance to experience their amazing new “La Terraza” restaurant and Omakase dining experience.

Clase Azul Tequila

To say I was excited, doesn’t quite do it justice. In case you’re not familiar with the brand, Clase Azul is an absolutely incredible Tequila and Mezcal brand from Mexico, that not only makes a fabulous, top shelf product, but creates actual, immediately recognisable artwork with their bottles.

Many of Clase Azul’s bottles are designed and made in limited edition batches, that once sold, will never be seen again. If you’ve been to a decent bar in the last 10 years, you’ll probably have seen one of their bottles on the top shelf.

The most recogniseable and most frequently seen is the Clase Azul Reposado Tequila bottle, with its famous white and blue patterning. However they actually have several different types of tequila and mezcal, each with a distinct bottle and taste.

All of this is to say that I was a huge fan long before this trip, and having a chance to visit their brand new experience in Los Cabos was a dream come true for me.

Our trip to Los Cabos was really just a short 4 day 3 night visit, and was for the purpose of experiencing all the wonderful things Clase Azul has created. But with that being said, any and all of the amazing activities I’m about to talk about could, and absolutely should, be added to any Los Cabos, Mexico itinerary.

La Terraza at Clase Azul – Day 1

To start with the simplest dining option, on the first night, we visited the La Terraza restaurant, which has an enormous list of cocktails made with (of course) all the different Clase Azul tequilas or mezcal, an extensive wine list, and some absolutely fantastic food.

As a funny side anecdote, supposedly this restaurant only exists because it was literally demanded by the customers that experienced the food in ‘A Taste of Culture’. Yes, it is that good.

As we were quite a large group, we decided to order as much food as we could and share everything family style. La Terraza is where I tried my first mole (pronounced moll-eh), and I will forever be hooked.

It’s also where I tried salsa macha for the first time and became an instant, lifelong addict (kind of a Mexican version of Chinese chili crisp – yes we brought three jars home with us).

Amongst other things, the seafood was exceptional (I’m still craving the grilled octopus), but honestly absolutely everything was delicious. I could have easily eaten here every night.

Incredible Cocktails at La Terraza

As if the food isn’t good enough, the cocktails are what really sends La Terraza into the stratosphere. I’m not ashamed to say that I did my best to be a good guest and try absolutely every cocktail on their menu, and I particularly loved their gold margarita; it had volcanic salt and gold leaf on the rim, and was a delightful blend of lemon juice, honey and Clase Azul’s Reposado Tequila.

Hands down the best margarita I’ve ever had, and if it wasn’t for the fact that I was doing my duty and trying all of the other cocktails, I would have probably drank my body weight in margaritas.

They also had an interesting take on an old fashioned, that used the Extra Añejo Tequila Ultra, and a few other interesting cocktails included agave. One even had an ice pop in it!

Ultimately, La Terraza is a great spot for a night of casual dining with fantastic drinks. If you’re in Los Cabos, this is a great option for dinner as the Clase Azul location is very close to many of the major hotels in the area and just a quick cab ride away.

Taste of Culture – Day 2

Taste of Culture is somewhat shrouded in mystery, and honestly, I don’t really want to spoil the experience by going into too much detail.

Suffice it to say that it is an amazing audiovisual, multisensory, interactive experience that will give you a far deeper understanding of the tequila making process and history, the differences between various tequilas and mezcals, and of course, Clase Azul’s unique processes.

The whole experience will take many unexpected twists and turns, but the majority of the experience surrounds trying 5 of the products that Clase Azul makes (4 tequila and 1 mezcal), paired with an absolutely stunning 5 course tasting menu.

Cameras weren’t allowed during this part of the experience, and I think that going in completely blind to what we’d experience absolutely enhanced it. All I can say is, expect the unexpected!

A taste of culture clase azul

The experience costs around $450USD per person, which may sound steep, but I doubt you will find anything else like this anywhere in the world. If you’re visiting Cabos and budget isn’t too much of a concern (or you’re just willing to spend all your money on tequila), then you absolutely HAVE to try this.

One thing I would say is that a couple of us were still a little peckish after our taste the culture experience (not their fault, I’m just giant…), so we headed straight back to La Terraza for a few more late night snacks. If you’re still a bit hungry when you come out, there’s no better place to be! I can definitely recommend the chicharrones and the corn!

When does A Taste of Culture run?

A taste of Culture runs Tuesday-Sunday at 6pm. There are only a few seats available each day so make sure you check ahead for reservations.

Omakase at Clase Azul – Day 3

For your third night, if you still have space, the Omakase is honestly the jewel in Clase Azul’s crown. There are only a few seats available each night as, much like traditional Omakases, you’re posted up at the bar, sitting directly across from the chef.

The 14 course Omakase has a Japanese fusion influence, as many of the courses were sashimi or nigiri based, but it’s also distinctly influenced by Mexican tastes.

Each course is absolutely stunning, starting with light, single bite dishes gradually became more complex and heavy as the meal progressed. Some of the dishes included bites of fried chicken, grilled octopus, caviar and more. I could barely move by the end of the evening, and of course, a couple of the courses were paired with Clase Azul mezcal and tequila. Aside from that, there was even a Mexican Sake!

With enough warning, the chefs are totally capable of handling any and all dietary requirements.

For self confessed, fairly well travelled foodies, this was honestly one of the top culinary experiences of our lives. I would honestly come back to Los Cabos just for another Omakase dinner at the bar.

Prices for the Omakase begin at $175USD per person, with drink pairings costing extra.

Clase Azul Omakase Hours

The Clase Azul Omakase runs Thursday-Sunday at 7pm. There is only one seating per night, so reservations are required.

The Boutique at Clase Azul

I can’t talk about our fantastic Clase Azul experience without at least briefly mentioning the incredible boutique they’ve created in Los Cabos.

As I mentioned earlier, there are many special editions of Clase Azul that you simply can’t buy anywhere else in the world. So it’s here in the Los Cabos boutique where you can see many of the special bottles displayed. And it’s only here that you can buy many of them.

Rare tequila bottles clase Azul

Prices vary dramatically, depending on how unique the bottle/drink is, but if you’re coming here just for this, I suspect you may have saved up for a bottle or two as well. Unique bottles can run into several thousand dollars (some even come with luggage!)

The entire boutique is absolutely beautiful, with one entire wall adorned with hand made ceramic leaf shaped tiles. There are plans to make the experience even more exciting soon, incorporating more AV aspects and more customisation options for customers, so watch out for more updates!

Our overall experience at Clase Azul Los Cabos

Obviously this kind of experience doesn’t come cheap, but it was honestly one of my favourite trips in a very long time. We love great food and drink, and can appreciate the lengths that Clase Azul has gone to to make this an absolutely memorable and surreal experience for its customers. We’re super grateful to Clase Azul for bringing us along.

If you are a tequila fanatic, then this place absolutely has to go on your bucket list.

If you’re visiting Los Cabos and are looking for something unique to experience, this should 100% be on your list as well.

Whenever I’m next in Los Cabos, you can guarantee I’m driving straight to Clase Azul from the airport. I can honestly say that this is one of the best things to do in Los Cabos.

Where to stay in Los Cabos

Montage Los Cabos

During our stay in Los Cabos, we were fortunate enough to stay in the incredible 5 star Montage Los Cabos resort. Montage is easily one of the finest hotels in Los Cabos. This is a breathtaking waterfront resort with many modern villas and several restaurants. It’s a stunning blend of arid, rocky desert, and beautiful ocean.

Montage Los Cabos

Our experience here was breathtaking, from the delicious food and seafood on offer at all the restaurants, to the huge selection of the most mind blowing pastries we were offered each day, to the spa amenities and the snorkelling.

Incredible pool at Montage Los Cabos

It’s honestly one of the most decadent and stunning resorts we’ve stayed at in years. Throw in the fact that they front onto one of Cabo’s best snorkelling beaches, and you have an absolute winner. If you’re visiting Los Cabos for a luxury holiday or a decadent food and drink vacation, then Montage pairs exceptionally well with all things Clase Azul.

My favourite touch? When we checked in, we were greeted with a build-your-0own margarita kit (complete with a small bottle of Clase Azul), and some fresh guacamole and chips. The guac came with all sorts of added extras, including crunchy crickets!

Montage x Clase Azul

To further cement the relationship between Clase Azul and Montage, Montage recently celebrated 20 years of hotels by commissioning 300 exclusive bottles of Montage x Clase Azul Tequila Ultra. As far as unique bottles of Tequila go, this Tequila is of their Extra Ańejo variety. It’s a full bodied tequila that’s almost closer to a barrel aged whiskey than a tequila. It is absolutely fantastic.

Clase Azul Ultra Extra Anejo Tequila

It’s so exclusive they won’t even sell you a bottle. You can only buy it by the Oz, exclusively in Montage hotels. If you’re a tequila connoisseur, then you really have to stay at Montage while you’re visiting.

Clase Azul MOntage los cabos

Clase Azul is particularly proud of the artwork on this special edition bottle, because of how difficult it was to create them. The black bottle is adorned with real platinum artwork, but before it’s put in the autoclave, the platinum paint is black. So the artists have to paint black on black – essentially decorate it blind!

The best way to experience Clase Azul in Los Cabos

Our experience with Clase Azul was spread over 4 days and 3 nights, and this was so that we could experience one of their 3 culinary adventures each night. If you plan to visit Clase Azul and do this experience properly, you’re going to want to come back on three different occasions. Each night will be completely different and unique in its own right. Trust me, it’s worth the time and money.

Final thoughts

While most of our travel centres around incredible outdoor experiences, we also like to experience the finer things when possible, and what Clase Azul has created in Mexico, absolutely checks all the boxes.

It’s creative and exciting, and, aside from coming away 10lbs heavier, I really felt like I took away a much deeper understanding and appreciation for tequila as well. I can’t recommend it enough!
