Our Favourite Winter Getaways: The Best Places You Can Go (And Buy!)

Thank you Vacasa for sponsoring this post.

As full-time travel bloggers, we know the importance of having multiple streams of income all too well.

It’s never smart to put all your eggs in one basket so we diversify as much as we can – travel blogging, photography, and real estate are our main streams of income although we have a handful of other ways we earn a living.

Diversifying your investments with real estate

Owning real estate is without a doubt our favourite type of investment because it creates a passive income stream that allows us to pursue the projects we’re truly passionate about.

It allows us a certain type of freedom and safety that’s hard to get elsewhere.

Find your vacation investment property

Recently, we were introduced to Vacasa, a vacation rental management platform that helps make buying, owning and renting vacation properties a breeze

They provide end-to-end property management services,  and their real estate arm, Vacasa Real Estate, can help buyers find a vacation rental property that fits their needs based on your income goals and, of course, they factor in when they’d like to have their property for personal use (because what good is owning a mountainside cabin if you can’t hit up the best powder days?).

Is your property a good rental property?

Vacasa also has a free cap rate calculator to help assess a vacation home’s potential as a rental property.

The Cap Rate is how much rental income a property earns per year as a percentage of the property purchase price.

The higher the percentage, the better the property is likely to perform as a rental property, and the more profit you’ll make.

Our Favourite Winter Destinations

To get you excited about winter rental properties, we’ve made a list of our absolute favourite winter mountain destinations, which also happen to be great places to invest in a vacation home.

Owning mountain real estate is never a bad idea, because there’s never a shortage of tourists looking to stay in houses with gorgeous views within easy driving distance of a world class ski resort.

Here are our top picks based on the popularity of the real estate market AND how good the skiing is close by:

Canmore, Alberta, Canada

Closest ski hills: Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort

Canmore is a quiet mountain community with a passion for adventure and winter sports.

In Canmore, you’re less than 20 minutes from the nearest ski hill, not to mention the Canmore Nordic Centre which is world renowned for their enormous network of cross-country ski trails.

Big Sky, Montana

Closest ski hills: Big Sky Resort

Big Sky Resort boasts some of the best snowfall in the Rockies and some of the shortest lift lines. That means more time shredding powder and less people. Sign us up!

Located at the heart of the San Bernardino National Forest which is less than 100 miles east of Los Angeles, there are thousands of potential guests to the area just itching to get away from the city and retreat into the serene wilderness of Big Bear.

Dillon, Colorado

Closest ski hills: Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort, Breckenridge Ski Resort

With an abundance of trails, lakeside views, winter sports and 4 world class ski resorts, there’s something for everyone here in Dillon, CO.
